Fortner-Clayton-Hamilton Trio

Exclusive Bay Area Performance

December 5-6, 2026

Jazz

programmed by Jessica Felix

Three masters of modern jazz come together for two special nights THE 222. Pianist Sullivan Fortner, bassist John Clayton, drummer Jeff Hamilton, each a celebrated bandleader, composer, and collaborator, join forces in an intimate trio setting that highlights both the tradition and the vitality of contemporary jazz. Together they create a trio steeped in swing, spontaneity, and deep musical conversation. Their performances celebrate the timeless language of the jazz trio while showcasing the individuality and brilliance of three extraordinary artists.

The trio will draw in part from a program they performed together in Europe last summer that celebrated the legacy of Oscar Peterson. In addition to music honoring Peterson’s iconic trio tradition, the concert will also feature original compositions by each artist, showcasing the distinct voices of three of today’s leading jazz musicians in an intimate and dynamic setting that bridges reverence for the past with the creative voices of today’s leading improvisers.

Sullivan Fortner won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album for his album Southern Nights at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards on February 1, 2026. This marks his third career Grammy win.

John Clayton, a Grammy Award–winning bassist, composer, and arranger, has performed and recorded with artists ranging from Diana Krall and Paul McCartney to Yo-Yo Ma. A former principal bassist of the Amsterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, he and Jeff Hamilton later co-founded the renowned Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, one of the premier big bands in jazz today.

Jeff Hamilton, a respected drummers in jazz, is known for his impeccable swing, taste, and musicality. Throughout his career he has performed with legends including Ray Brown, Oscar Peterson, and Monty Alexander, and remains a driving force behind the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra as well as his own acclaimed trio.

“I’ve been guided by a village of musicians who helped me understand the humility that goes along with playing music at the highest level you can. Ray Brown used to tell me to ‘Learn how to play the bass!’ Just take care of the music and it will take care of you.”
