Camila Meza

April 24, 2027

Jazz

programmed by Jessica Felix

For this concert, Camila Meza will be playing music from her latest recording Portal which is her boldest statement to date, comprising her love for storytelling, her multiple and diverse influences and her constant push for exploration. In this project, full of harmonic richness and improvisations, we enter an almost cinematic experience where the listener is invited into a journey of transformation. Touching on themes of collective awakening, the archetypes of the Mother and The Wise Woman, the music leads us to a place of excitement and also reflective reckoning with the shortcomings of our society. The music transmits a rebellious joy and reminds us of our power to envision and co-create the beauty we want to experience in our lifetimes.

Meza has a light, airy confidence in her vocals. Her guitar skills, electric and acoustic, are equally gratifying, marked by the influence of Wes Montgomery and Pat Metheny (who enlisted Meza to perform and serve as musical director for his NEA Jazz Masters induction in 2018). Her sound is inspired by her Chilean upbringing and her fluidity with Latin music, Brazilian folk and pop, which she blends with her love of jazz.

Meza sees Portal, her sixth studio effort and debut for GroundUP Music, as her most personal to date, both in its complexity and origins. Composed of all originals, Portal is about a passage, a sort of transmutation. Meza wanted to portray the human capacity to transform reality from the evident darkness that surrounds it, into its potential for light and beauty.

“I also wanted this album to be very cinematic and visual and take you to different places where you’re confronted with your own images,” Meza continues. “[Presenting] someone else’s story I felt was not right. So for the first time, I decided I’m going to trust this whole original collection of songs.”

Portal was six years in the making, as most of the songs were written in 2019 as part of a commission for The Jazz Gallery in New York.
