Dean Rader: Ekphrastic Workshop
Art Gallery Writing at The 222
February 18, 2027
Programmed by Denise Low
This workshop is a rare opportunity to spend time with one of the Bay Area treasures, the accomplished writer Dean Rader. He is a master poet—and national commentator on visual art. This master class, accessible to all levels, takes place in the 10,000 sq.ft. of the Paul Mahder Gallery. Participants can find inspiration in the gallery’s collections as they paint with words or otherwise find connections between images and writing.
His acclaimed book inspired by the artist Cy Twombly is a guidebook to ways to use art as a starting point for verse. Calligraphy is another area of his interests. Rader told interviewer Ingrid Vega, “Immersive workshops do both short term and long-term work. There are immediate benefits that might make the poem under discussion stronger, but conversations, techniques, and strategies learned in the workshop have long lasting benefits that can make future poems stronger.” All genres are welcome.
