Handbook of Foams - translated by Francisco Aragon
by Gerardo Diego
June 4, 2027
Programmed by Denise Low
A constellation of Bay Area poets perform pieces from Handbook of Foams by Gerardo Diego—arguably the least known of Spain’s “Generation of 27,” which included Federico García Lorca. Published in 1924, Manual de espumas was one of the most important eruptions in the early phase of the 20th century Spanish avant-garde. Each poet will read a piece by Diego, as well as a poem of their own “in conversation with” the Spanish poet. NOTE: The first thirty attendees will receive will be gifted one complimentary Handbook of Foams (one book per household), compliments of Letras Latinas, a co-sponsor of this event.

"A century later, Gerardo Diego’s ultraist masterpiece arrives in English fully alive in Francisco Aragón’s vital translation, a reminder that some language doesn’t suffocate but breathes and invents."
