I and You
by Lauren Gunderson
January 8 - 17, 2026
Programmed by Aldo Billingslea
In Lauren Gunderson’s I and You, two polar-opposite teenagers are thrust together to complete a last-minute school project on Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. Caroline is cynical, sharp-tongued, and housebound due to a life-threatening illness, while Anthony is a high-achieving, jazz-loving athlete who bursts into her room with a half-finished poster and a waffle fries craving. As they argue over poetry and life, their initial friction evolves into an unexpectedly intimate bond, revealing their shared vulnerabilities and fears about the future.
The play is celebrated for its rhythmic, realistic dialogue and a breathtaking twist ending that recontextualizes their entire afternoon. As the boundaries between the two students blur, the story shifts from a standard teenage drama into a profound, metaphysical exploration of human connection and the ways in which we are never truly alone.
