Indigenous Voices: Janice Gould’s This Music: A Poetic Prose Memoir

presented by Jennifer Foerster and Kim Shuck

November 23, 2026

Literary

Programmed by Denise Low

Janice Gould, a northern California Indigenous woman, was a poet, essayist, musician, photographer, professor, activist, and theorist. This is the North Bay book launch for Gould’s posthumous hybrid memoir. Two of the book’s editors—Kim Shuck (Cherokee), former San Francisco Poet Laureate, essayist and fiber artist; and Jennifer Foerster (Mvskoke), published poet, arts administrator, and professor—present this many-layered work. This Music is a vital contribution to Indigenous and LGBTQ+ literatures, offering readers a rare and powerful account of gender, sexuality, and Native identity in mid-century and contemporary America.

This work honors Gould’s legacy while expanding the canon of poetic memoir. Ideal for readers of poetry, memoir, and Indigenous literature, this book will resonate deeply with anyone drawn to stories of resilience, creativity, and the enduring power of memory. Other editors of This Music are Deborah Miranda, enrolled Ohlone, poet, and author of the iconic Bad Indians: A Tribal Memoir; and Lisa Tatonetti, Kansas State University professor and author.

"It’s hard to be a poet...We learn from others, we experiment, but then we have to make our own way and find a language that can bear our truth. I guess that’s the only advice I can give: do your work and do it honestly and generously. Sometimes that will mean encountering challenges or problems that are hard to solve, but it’s important to persist if poetry means anything to you, and if it’s to survive in a world where suffering is ever present, but where joy remains possible."
