Jazz

programmed by Jessica Felix

In a jazz world brimming with brilliant and adventurous pianists, Marc Cary stands apart by way of pedigree and design as one of New York’s best jazz pianists.  With his Focus Trio, Cary strikes an organic balance between jazz harmonies and rhythms from Africa and India. Drummer and tabla player Sameer Gupta plays an essential role in these rhythms along with bassist David Ewell, who are the original members of the Focus Trio and collaborators for over 20 years.

Grammy-nominated pianist Cary brings into sharp focus his many influences-from deep indigenous world rhythms to hard bop to classical lyricism. The energy and the cultural wealth of Harlem, New York resonate in their music. Cary is alternately percussive and subtle, animated and introspective, balancing energy and lyricism with a depth of personal expression that which he calls “classical indigenous jazz for the people.” Cary’s mission statement for Focus is “to bring indigenous rhythms together with American jazz to create new palettes of sound.”
