Lars von Trier’s Melancholia stars Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Alexander Skarsgård, and Kiefer Sutherland in a haunting meditation on depression and the end of the world. Set across a lavish wedding and its aftermath, the film follows two sisters as a rogue planet named Melancholia hurtles toward Earth. What begins as an intimate portrait of emotional unraveling expands into a cosmic drama. Stay afterwards for a discussion of the film.

Structured in two distinct chapters, Melancholia unfolds through shifting emotional perspectives, using the intimate tensions of family life to frame an approaching global catastrophe. The film juxtaposes fragile human rituals—celebration, obligation, control—against an indifferent universe, building a sense of inevitability that is both psychological and cosmic. Rather than focusing on spectacle, it lingers on mood, silence, and the subtle shifts in behavior that reveal how different people process fear, grief, and uncertainty.

The production is marked by its striking visual language, with cinematographer Manuel Alberto Claro drawing inspiration from Romantic paintings to compose richly detailed, almost dreamlike images. Slow-motion sequences accompanied by Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde give the film an operatic weight, reinforcing its themes of longing and doom. Von Trier conceived the project during a period of personal struggle with depression, which informs the film’s emotional texture and its unconventional portrayal of resilience. Filmed in Sweden, the contrast between handheld immediacy and meticulously composed tableaux creates a distinctive aesthetic that blends realism with mythic grandeur. Premiering at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, the film earned widespread acclaim, including the Best Actress award for Kirsten Dunst, and remains one of von Trier’s most visually and thematically resonant works.

NOTE: This season we are doing Staff’s Pick programming for film. Watch for selections from Paul Mahder, Jonathan Wind, and Erin Partridge.
