Venus in Fur, by playwright David Ives, is a two-character play that explores power, desire, and control through an audition that gradually blurs the line between actor and role. s the interaction unfolds, the balance between the two characters shifts in unexpected ways, challenging assumptions about authority and performance.

Set in a rehearsal room, the play centers on a director and a late-arriving actress whose initial meeting appears routine but quickly becomes more layered. As they work through scenes, the boundaries between text and reality begin to dissolve, with language, gesture, and intention taking on shifting meanings.

The structure alternates between staged material and moments that seem outside it, creating ambiguity about what is being performed and what is spontaneous. This fluidity allows the audience to observe how interpretation can reshape both character and situation in real time.

Drawing loosely on themes from Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s original novel, the work engages with questions of dominance, submission, and the role of imagination in constructing identity. Its focus remains on the evolving dynamic between the two figures, as each responds to and redefines the terms of their interaction.

"Seriously smart and very funny stage seminar on the destabilizing nature of sexual desire: vanilla-flavored, kink-festooned or anything in between."
