Red, Rothko, and You

Literary Workshop

Sept 21, 2026

Literary

Programmed by Denise Low

Join this writing group in exploring creative responses to the visual arts, especially the works of painter Mark Rothko. This interactive opportunity gives participants a chance to extend inspirations of artists like Rothko into their own creative works—a new “palette” of words or new organization. References to other works of art add dimensions and depth to writing as they help creators identify their own individual voices. Workshop responses may include writing and related word-arts media, poetry, and/or visual language. Participants may want to attend The 222’s concurrent production of the play Red, based on Rothko’s artistic vision. This workshop is part of in-depth programming at The 222, to tickle more parts of the brain! Our director Erin Partridge will have programming related to Rothko’s murals and other artwork in the play: The Art In Red.
